BAS plays a very active role in the visual arts in Buckinghamshire, organizing exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations, outdoor art-trails, gallery visits and other art-related events. Many of these are open to the public. The Society maintains close links with both the County Museum in Aylesbury and the Milton Keynes Gallery.

The Society currently has around 100 members a large proportion of which are professional and semi-professional artists. Representing a wide variety of styles and media, all members have been elected to the society on the basis of their skills as artists.

The objective of Buckinghamshire Art Society is "the encouragement of painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture and related activities within the County of Buckinghamshire". To achieve this "the Society shall strive to present and represent the Best of Art in Buckinghamshire". In order to live up to its objective and be a true and worthy inspiration to artists around the County, all work submitted to BAS exhibitions is subjected to selection by a panel consisting of Invited Honorary Members, invited experts on art assessment as well as some of the Society's well-reputed members.

Since its foundation in 1920, BAS has organized at least two exhibitions per year, traditionally one in the autumn for members only, and one in the spring, to which non-members can also submit their work.

In order to encourage artistic activities among younger members of the public BAS recently instituted a Young Artist Award open to 16 - 18 year old art students in the County.
